The Albatross EP unleashes Video Nasties’ distinctive new vision, and one that defies categorisation. Video Nasties have taken the early blueprint of their own fuzzed-up, punk-rock and given it a sonic reinvention. Underwhelmed by their work with other producers, the band took over the production controls themselves for this release.
Each song spits and snarls with unusual time signatures and an underpinning of white noise and dizzying melody. Infusing synths and crunching, dual guitars with the intoxicating, possessed and frantic delivery of enigmatic vocalist James Churcher, the young quintet paint beautifully disturbed portraits of life in the city, and make good on their promise to conjure a freshness and immediacy to Video Nasties’ controlled aggression.
Formed at school, and yet still barely out of college, Video Nasties take the rough traces of America’s prime alt-college imprint and spike it with an urgency and desire akin to the earliest incarnation of Factory Records’ roster. You can hear it in the instrumentation that refuses to let each other breathe, bending and shaping each other into submission. You can then witness it in their enthralling live shows.
Creatively, the band ensures that what you see and hear comes from the minds of the five members only. Pooling together ideas and creative thought from their shed, Video Nasties are adamant that control remains solely in their own hands.
The Albatross EP is an introduction to this devilishly exciting and brand new British act that already have their eyes on grabbing 2009 and making it their own.
